What $0 with no gap means
For an eligible standard appointment, HerDoc accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment. You pay $0 for the appointment.
A private standard appointment will cost $49 AUD. A private long appointment will cost $95 AUD. A pharmacy, pathology or imaging provider, or a specialist you are referred to, may charge separately for their own service.
The usual ways to qualify
MyMedicare is a free, voluntary way to register with your usual GP practice. It is separate from creating a HerDoc account.
You need to be enrolled in Medicare. For many GP phone and video appointments, you also need one of the following:
- You are registered through MyMedicare with the same practice providing the telehealth appointment.
- You received a qualifying Medicare-billed face-to-face service from the GP or practice providing the telehealth appointment within the previous 12 months.
When an exception may apply
An exception means the usual MyMedicare or face-to-face relationship route may not be required for a particular person or service. Examples include:
- a person experiencing homelessness
- a person in a currently declared natural-disaster area
- certain sexual and reproductive health services
The examples are not a complete list
Other exemptions or service-specific rules may apply. An exception does not mean HerDoc offers every service covered by Medicare or that every appointment will qualify.
What to do next
HerDoc is not taking appointments yet. You can create your patient account now or log in to an existing account. Creating a patient account does not confirm Medicare eligibility or book an appointment.
Whether an appointment can be bulk billed still needs to be confirmed for that appointment.
DVA-funded appointments
HerDoc supports DVA-funded consultations for eligible Veteran Card holders. DVA funding is separate from Medicare bulk billing. Coverage depends on your card, the condition being treated and the appointment. Confirm DVA coverage before booking.
- All Conditions (Gold) Veteran Card: treatment may be funded for all health conditions.
- Specific Conditions (White) Veteran Card: treatment may be funded for accepted conditions and eligible non-liability health conditions.
- Pharmaceuticals Only (Orange) Veteran Card: supports eligible medicines and does not cover GP appointments.
More about the Medicare rules
The exact rule depends on the Medicare item used. Under the usual relationship rule, MyMedicare registration must be with the same practice providing the telehealth appointment. The other route is a qualifying Medicare-billed face-to-face service from the providing GP or practice in the previous 12 months. Seeing a GP at another practice does not by itself establish this relationship. A previous phone or video appointment does not count as the face-to-face service.
A first HerDoc appointment may qualify through MyMedicare registration with the providing practice, an existing qualifying relationship with the providing GP or practice, or a relevant person-based or service-specific exemption. A previous eligible appointment does not make every later appointment eligible. Each appointment must meet the rules for the Medicare item, patient, GP and service at that time.
Person-based and setting-based exemptions in the Medicare rules also include an infant under 12 months and a service provided by an eligible practitioner at an Aboriginal Medical Service or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. These rules do not mean HerDoc provides appointments for infants or every service covered by an exemption.
Specified sexual health, reproductive health and blood-borne virus phone or video items can have an exception to the usual relationship rule. For this pathway, the practitioner must be at a medical practice or have a formal agreement with a medical practice that provides onsite face-to-face services. It excludes assisted reproductive technology and antenatal care. It is not a blanket exception for women's health or for a particular condition.

FAQs
Can my first HerDoc appointment be bulk billed?
It may be. A first appointment can qualify through MyMedicare registration with the providing practice, a qualifying relationship with the providing GP or practice, or a relevant exemption. The appointment must still meet HerDoc requirements and the Medicare rules.
Does an old phone or video appointment count towards the 12-month rule?
No. It does not count as the qualifying face-to-face service. The usual route instead requires MyMedicare registration with the same practice or a qualifying Medicare-billed face-to-face service from the providing GP or practice in the previous 12 months.
Could a follow-up appointment be bulk billed?
It may be, but each appointment must meet the Medicare rules and HerDoc requirements at that time. A previous eligible appointment does not make every later appointment eligible.
Does HerDoc support DVA-funded appointments?
HerDoc supports DVA-funded consultations for eligible Veteran Card holders. DVA funding is separate from Medicare bulk billing. Coverage depends on your card, the condition being treated and the appointment. Confirm DVA coverage before booking.
